Year 3, 4 and 6 took part in a workshop all about invertebrates. We found out why invertebrates are important to the environment and the food chain.
We also found out why some invertebrates are endangered or have become extinct. We then made ‘seed balls’ which can be planted to help improve the environment. The workshop ended with a quiz about everything we had learnt. Following on from our workshop last week, we made our own drawing tools to create different textures using a variety of materials. We used our drawing tools to perform repeated mark-making in the style of Anna Maria Maiolino.
On Friday 1st November Year 6 were invited to a workshop run by Onjali Rauf, from East London. She is the award-winning author of 'The Boy at the Back of the Class' which we have been reading as part of the Tower Hamlets Book Award for this year.
Onjali was very inspirational and talked to us about the refugee crisis which inspired her to write the book. She has worked with many refugees and those that help them over the past few years. She has also set up her own charity, Making Herstory, set up in memory of her aunt, supporting women's rights. She told us stories of children who still live in refugee camps and adults who work tirelessly to help them every single day. She also reminded us of refugees that have already had such positive impacts on the quality of all our lives, past and present, such as Alfred Einstein and Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google. We were given signed copies of her book and all the class were able to choose their own book provided by the London Childrens Book Project. We were so excited that we started reading them on the tube on the way home! Year 6 were invited to a special prize giving event at City Hall on Wednesday 30th October to celebrate coming 2nd out of over 1000 classes in the Sumdog competition during London Maths Week in July.
They met the CEO of London Maths Week and we thanked her for providing funding to all schools in London so extra events could be run in schools like our Festival of Triangles at William Davis. The children were awarded medals, a special 'goody bag' and treated to some delicious snacks plus a bracing walk over Tower Bridge to get there! A particular thank you as well to Shamima who gave up her time after school to come with us and well done to all of Year 6-we are all really proud of you! Earlier this week we visited the University of East London’s SportsDock to take part in an indoor cricket competition. One of our teams came in third place and the other in fifth place.
We have been learning about Shackleton and took part in a ‘polar explorers’ workshop. By looking at historical evidence we were able to imagine what it would be like to be stuck in the ice and how crews kept themselves entertained for months on end.
Explorers hauled sledges loaded with everything they needed across the Arctic and each man pulled the equivalent of twice his body weight. We had a go at trying to pull the sledges and our hands were very sore! As the variety of sweets is expanding we created classification keys to sort them into groups. We needed to make sure our questions needed a ‘yes/no’ answer.
