Early ReadingAt William Davis Primary School children learn to read using the Read Write Inc phonics programme (RWI). It is a systematic approach to learning letters and sounds that enables children to read and write successfully.
A child who reads for pleasure is a reader for life. Our aim is to establish each child as a lifetime reader based on developing a love of reading. We ensure our children are given a rich curriculum which encourages reading of books and other kinds of texts. “Schools that take the business of reading for pleasure seriously, where teachers read, talk with enthusiasm and recommend books, and where provision for reading is planned carefully, are more likely to succeed with their pupils’ reading.” (Ofsted) |
Through RWI children will:
Green and Red words Green words are words your child can sound out and blend together using the speed sounds they have learnt. Your child will be able to read more easily if these words are practised first. Red words are words containing spelling patterns that cannot be sounded out. Red words have to be learnt by sight. |
Pupil's communication books are maintained and monitored by staff regularly. These are kept in each child's book bag and home reading books are changed as appropriate, according to the RWI programme and linked to the child's developmental stage of reading. We encourage reading daily at home.
