Religious Education (RE)
Religious Education is a vital part of our children’s education and is also legally required for all children. The allocated curriculum time for RE are as follows: EYFS will deliver short sessions implemented through continuous provision, KS1 will receive 36 hours per year and KS2 are entitled to 45 hours per year.
Unlike other National Curriculum subjects, the specific requirements for the teaching of RE are decided upon locally. In September 2017 William Davis has implemented the new RE Syllabus for Tower Hamlets.
The curriculum for RE aims to ensure children:
1. Know about and understand a range of religions and worldviews
2. Express ideas about the significance and impact of religions and worldviews
3. Gain the skills needed to engage with religions and worldviews
The diversity of cultures, beliefs and values will be explored and celebrated through the broad and balanced curriculum. By ensuring there is tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs an ethos for respect will be promoted and stereotypes will be challenged.
Children will take part in visits to religious places of worship as trips are a vital part of our children’s RE education, enabling them to be exposed to a number of different religions and their followers first-hand. Trips usually include a tour of the place of worship, a Q&A session and sometimes even a live demonstration of a religious act of worship or a workshop.
From time to time, we also invite in members of the local religious community to come and speak to the children during assembly times e.g. at harvest time or during advent and also during classroom sessions in order to bring a unit to life.
Throughout the year we also run a number of religiously-themed assemblies to supplement the curriculum.
Please see below for the RE curriculum overview.
