Year 5 were visiting the National Maritime Museum to participate in a workshop named 'Meet the Vikings - Raider, Invaders, Traders.' The workshop helped us to further our knowledge about the Vikings - our history topic. We were able to handle artefacts and found out more about Viking ships, travel and the goods they traded. We also had a a chance to look at some of the galleries in the museum.
As part of our DT topic, Year 5 are designing and making their own mini aprons. Once we have prepared our designs, we will be learning some sewing techniques. Watch this space to see or final products!
Year 5 visited the Half Moon Theatre to watch a play called 'Emily Rising', which was a puppet show performed by the Little Angle Company. We also had a chance to participate in some drama games and to take a look at an art exhibition.
Year 5 were working with Sara Heywood, an artist from Bow Arts on a whole school drawing and mark-making project. The theme of the project is 'sustainable futures' and it focuses on the important role bees have in our eco system. We learnt about the lives of bees and throughout the day, experimented with a range of mediums, including various types of pens, charcoal and ink. You will be able to admire the amazing art work we created in our 'William Davis gallery' display later this month!
In art, we took a closer look at Anglo-Saxon dwellings. We then experimented with line drawings and designed sculptures 'with a personality', based on this
Y5 visited the Museum of London to find out more about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, as part of their 'Invaders and Settlers' topic.. After the workshop, we went on a museum trail to investigate artifacts and their origins and to find out more about life during Saxon and Viking times.
Take a look at Year 5 doing the 'Daily Mile' first thing in the morning.
What a team! We have nearly half the class completing a full mile in just over 10 minutes and the remaining children not far behind completing two thirds of a mile. Keep it up! On Friday 24th May, Year 4 had a very exciting Maths and Sports day. They were visited by Deloitte, a financial company who led a very exciting workshop. Throughout the course of the day the team introduced various maths calculations via sporting activities. The children took part in various activities including football and basketball. The children learnt about how maths is used in sport i.e. looking at scores and calculating averages, looking at angles when shooting a ball into a net.
Year 4 had a fantastic (but tiring) day! Year 4 took part in the Tower Hamlets 'Slambassadors' Poetry Competition. The children participated in poetry workshops at school and five children were then selected to perform their poetry at an event at Morpeth Secondary School. The children did really well, they all received certificates and Esther won the prize for 'Best Solo Performance'.
Well done Year 4! Kate and Tahmina are really proud! As part of their topic on chocolate year 4 have been learning about teeth and eating in their science lessons.
The children investigated the effect of different liquids on teeth. The children were able to use chicken bones instead of teeth as bones are made up of calcium just like teeth. They kept the bones in three liquids cola, vinegar and water and observed them overtime. The children were surprised with the results, the bone in water remained the same, the bone in the cola become discolored and the bone in the vinegar became soft and bendy! Why do you think that is? From their experiment, Year 4 have learnt that both sugar and acid cause tooth decay because vinegar contains a lot of acid and cola contains sugar and they both damaged the bones. The children were able to talk about the results and were able to draw very good conclusions using scientific language. |
