As part of their topic on water, Year 3 have been finding out about states of matter and changing states. They have learnt that water can exist as three different states solid (ice), liquid (water) and gas (steam/water vapour).
The children investigated the factors that affect melting, they had some interesting results which allowed them to think about what happens to particles when materials change state. The children realised how particles in liquids must move as they themselves observed first hand how the blue ice melted and flowed then mixed with the yellow ice to form green water. Amazing Findings! In Year 3 we used modelling clay to make models of the world. We used blue for the oceans and green for the continents.
We needed a lot of blue because we know that 70 per cent of the Earth is covered in water. Year 3, 4 and 6 took part in a workshop all about invertebrates. We found out why invertebrates are important to the environment and the food chain. We also found out why some invertebrates are endangered or have become extinct.
We then made ‘seed balls’ which can be planted to help improve the environment. The workshop ended with a quiz about everything we had learnt. In RE year 3 have been learning about Christian beliefs about God. The children were very excited during their visit to St Matthews church, they enjoyed looking around the church and identifying the different features. They listened attentively to Reverend Erin's talk about the Holy Trinity and were very excited that they had the opportunity to ask her questions that are sometimes very difficult to answer.
William Davis have been working with artists from Bow Arts on a drawing and mark making project. The theme is 'Sustainable Futures' and we have decided to focus on bees and the important role they have in our eco system. The children have learnt about the amazing life of bees and observed how beautiful they are. We will be working on putting together a big display of all our wonderful work later in November, so you can come and see it for yourself!
Year 3 have started a new unit in Computing 'Using Technology Safely'.
They have been researching and finding out about the different ways you can communicate online i.e. email, messaging, blogs and video calls. They then presented their findings on a big poster. Shadow Puppet Play
Year 3 have been learning about how shadows are formed. They have been investigating the type of materials which make the darkest shadows. The children created shadow puppets out of different materials and created their own puppet play using a screen and torch (light). Through various experiments and the shadow puppet play the children learnt that opaque objects create the darkest shadows because they block out a lot of the light. In their new Unit, Myself and My Relationships- My Emotions, Year 3 have been learning to recognise and communicate a range of emotions. Through both role play and circle time games, they have been learning that quite often their behaviors are linked to their feelings. The children are learning that sometimes our emotions can affect our interactions with others.
The children are really enjoying this unit of work and they are becoming more confident in talking about their feelings and worries. In science, year 3 have been learning about light and dark. They have been identifying sources of light in their environment as well as investigating the properties of materials which reflect light.
At the beginning of term, Year 3 looked at their School Rules and Values during circletime. They produced posters which highlighted the school's rules and values and created a display near our reflection table. The children agreed that they would try their best to follow these rules.
