For the Summer Fair this year, we needed to think of a triangle-shaped food to sell. We of course chose Andrew's favourite food: Pizza!
First we spread tomato passata all over our dough and then we put it into the oven for 5 minutes so that the dough and base would cook. While it was in the oven, we cut up some mozzarella. After 5 minutes, we took out the pizza and put the cheese on top and cooked the pizza for a further 5 minutes. We then cut them into triangles and then... buon appetito! La pizza perfetta! We hoped you enjoyed eating them at the Summer Fair! For Maths Week, we decided to create Shape Aliens!
We used triangles (for the Festival of Triangles!), squares, circles and rectangles to make our aliens. We then reflected in our books by recording what shapes we used to make our amazing aliens. Keep an eye out on this blog to see more Maths Week activities! Inspired by the Gigantic Turnip, we decided to plant and sow our own vegetables in Year 1! We chose to grow peas, as they are very nutritious and good for us!
We started by planting our seeds and giving them water. Over the half term holidays we all took our plants home to look after them during the break. Keep an eye on this page to see how they've grown. This week in Year 1, we have started to look at writing instructions in English. Before we started writing however, we decided that it would be good for us to first make a tasty lettuce and cheese sandwich.
Firstly, we put our instructions in order. Then, after sorting them, we began to make our sandwich. We had to be very careful to follow the instructions because if we didn't the sandwich might not turn out the way we wanted them! Next week we will be write our own set of instructions on how to make a lettuce and cheese sandwich! Last week in Year 1, we went on a trip to the local church, St. Matthew's!
We went to the church as we recently looked at what is inside a church in RE. We got to speak to Erin, who is the priest at the church and had the chance to look around. We found things such as the altar, font and lots of candles! We also thought about who goes to church and why they go. Next week we are visiting the East London Mosque; keep on an eye on this blog for photos! In Year 1 our topic this half term is 'Green Fingers'. We are learning all about plants and the environment around us.
In Art, we decided to explore Claude Monet, who was a French artist who loved to paint nature. We took one of his garden paintings and chose our favourite section. Then we sketched it into our art books. The next day, we painted our section using primary colours and mixing them to create other colours. In Maths, we had a go at problem solving with our partners.
We had to make houses with blocks, with each block being 1 room. How many different ways could we make a 7 room house? We had to make sure though that we only had 2 rooms on the floor. It was challenging! Can you have a go at home? In Year 1 we have started to explore capacity and volume.
Today we looked at identifying full, half-full and empty cups. We used rice to fill up cups and decide if there cups were empty, full or half-full. After we filled our cups, we labelled them as empty, half-full and full. We have been really busy in Year 1 designing and making an animal mask!
We will be exploring animals in science, so we thought it would be an amazing idea to design a mask of our favourite animal. Firstly, we had to plan our mask by drawing what it might look like. We also needed to think about our animals features. Then we made our masks using a range of materials. Finally, we had to think about how we could keep our masks on. We decided to try and use string and a hole punch to keep our masks on. Here are Abdullah,Umamah and Saiful showing us their fantastic animal masks! In Year 1 we are reading 'Beegu' in English. It is an interesting story about an alien who crashes to Earth!
We decided that it would be a good idea to create our own alien model using clay. Here we are molding our clay into our shapes. Soon we will use and mix primary colors to paint our aliens. Stay tuned! |
