Inspired by our visit to the Museum of Docklands, we were visited by the amazing poet, Laila Sumpton. She helped us to gather ideas for our own poems which will be published in a special book next year. We will all get to perform some of our poems too, in school and at St Paul's Cathedral. Thank you Laila for giving us the confidence to be so creative with our words, thank you to the National Literacy Trust for organising the project and thank you to Pilot Pen who gifted us with our own pens and notebooks to record our writing in.
Trip to Museum of Docklands. We explored the Museum of Docklands to gather some inspiration for our poetry writing workshop in a few week’s time. We had a workshop where we investigated some artefacts and tried to work out where they came from, who used them and what they we used for.
Everyone in Johnson Class received a ‘Star of the Week’ award from Charlotte for managing to collect heaps of recycled material that they could reuse for the day-long Science workshop. Well done everyone for collaborating so well!
The children made some fabulous Insect hotels to protect our insect wildlife over the forthcoming cold, damp winter months. What an exciting week - as the class keep practising for 2 different singing performances- we also had an amazing (and free) trip to the ice rink at Canary Wharf. Even though there were lots of nerves before getting on the ice (including adults) - everyone had a great time- showing amazing resilience to get up if they fell.
Art lessons- we’re working on using scale to draw faces and developing techniques (such as smudging, light and hard pressing and cross-hatching) to add shadow and depth to our pictures of fruit and people. We’re trying to produce a ‘surreal’ portrait in the style of the iconic Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo.
This all fits in with our writing and reading where we are learning about the Amazon Rainforest and imagining what it would be like to be lost there! We are settling down in our new groups in our new classroom with some new classmates and some from before.
